EM Gun Development Program An Electromagnetic (EM) Gun uses the force from the interaction of electric current and magnetic field to launch a projectile, versus a conventional gun, which accelerates a projectile with hot, high-pressure gas and explosives. Curtiss-Wright is the prime contractor for development of one of the key components of an EM gun, the pulsed power supply (PPS) system. The PPS creates and stores kinetic energy used to launch projectiles at high speed and velocities not possible with traditional chemical propellants. Advantages include:
All service branches have requirements for EM weapons, including armored vehicles, marine vessels and forward-deployed field forces. |
